In recent decades, contemporary Arab thought has witnessed the emergence of innovative approaches to confronting the Islamic theological heritage. In the meantime, Hassan Hanafi (died in 2016) with the project of the “Islamic Left” elevated the concept of “al-Thawra” (revolution) from a purely political phenomenon to an ontological and theological principle. The aim of his central work, “From Belief to Revolution,” is to shift the focus of theology from abstract metaphysical discussions to “the believing human being and revolutionary praxis” in the form of a “liberation theology.” This research, with an analytical-critical approach, explores Hanafi’s methodological foundations. The findings show that to achieve this transition, Hanafi uses the concept of “epoch” in Husserl’s phenomenology to suspend the metaphysical assumptions of traditional theology; However, in practice he does not adhere to an impartial suspension and, by substituting Marxist assumptions, reduces phenomenology to an “ideological hermeneutics.” The result of this approach, although it leads to the social dynamism of religion and the redefinition of the slogan “There is no god but Allah” in the form of a dialectic of negation and affirmation, carries the risk of reducing the transcendental sphere of religion to a purely mundane ideology.
