The phenomenon of contemporary Islamic extremism has been one of the fundamental challenges for Indonesia between 1997 and 2022, confronting the country with numerous political, social, and security crises. During this period, a wide range of extremist groups emerged, whose origins, growth, and activism were influenced by a variety of factors, such as the suppression of supporters of political Islam and Islamists, economic poverty, the structural weakness of the state in resolving conflicts, the violence-oriented interpretation of religious texts, the presence of colonialism, the expansion of transnational networks, and the globalization of extremism, etc. Although the reactions of the government, civil society, religious society, and the general public, especially compared to other Muslim-majority countries, have largely spared Indonesia from the devastating consequences of this trend, challenges such as the continued activity of some educational institutions with extremist tendencies, the decline in the influence and authority of moderate Islamic movements, and the gaps in cultural and religious policymaking continue to keep the risk of reproducing extremism alive in this country. This article, with a descriptive-analytical approach and in a library manner, seeks to examine the context and roots of the formation of contemporary Islamic extremism in Indonesia, its historical developments, the characteristics and performance of the most prominent extremist groups, the factors of Indonesia's relative resilience to this trend, the existing strategies for containing it, and the future prospects for extremism in this country.
